Jeffrey Berend, founder of Curacao-Actief, says one of the reasons why he created the company is to "share the unique treasures of Curacao in a way that the natural, cultural, and historical resources are preserved and maintained for future generations '. However, the realization of this ideal was not that simple. Tourism was always present on the island but sustainable tourism was not getting the attention and resources it deserved. It was considered more as an afterthought with profitability seen as a priority. 

OUR MISSION is to raise our customer’s awareness of the nature, culture and warmth (and we are not talking about the temperature!) but the friendliness of the local community of Curacao. We want to involve and inspire our customers based on these three fundamental elements.

HOW CAN WE DO THIS:
BY BEING AWARE AND ACTING RESPONSIBLY IN ALL ASPECTS OF OUR HOLIDAY ACTIVITES TO MINIMISE THE IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT, NATURE, AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

Our objectives were clear from the start - our tours and activities must have no adverse environmental effect on the island. At the same time ensuring that our customer’s enjoyment and fun filled days are not comprised in any way. How we achieve our objectives:

• Our tour groups are small, maximum nine people per guide. This helps to limit and minimise the impact and potential risk of damage to the natural area and environment.

• "Leave nothing behind other than your footprint’’. We take all our waste with us and leave nothing behind that does not belong there. All our waste is recycled. The collected plastic and aluminium cans are stored on our office premises, which are collected monthly by the recycling company Curaplas who take it to their recycle plant in Colombia.
  

• We do our best to ensure that all our practices are green and sustainable:
• Our jeeps use eco-diesel that is produced locally from waste oil, which until recently, used to be disposed of, and dumped into the local environment.
• We recycle the water from our air-conditioners (working in Curacao without air conditioning is not pleasant!) and use it to wash our jeeps.
• We use locally produced home-grown products and ingredients for our lunches and refreshments.
