Jan Thiel

18-08-2009

SUMMARY: In comparison to other hiking areas, Jan Thiel is unique because of its variety - salt ponds, a lagoon, cliffs and panoramic views and not forgetting the fascinating Kueba di Wela which is a small cave accessible by a hole in the ground. There are different trails in the former plantations Jan Thiel (also called "Damascus" or "Damasco") Koraal Specht and Zuurzak (known locally as "Sorsaka"). The Plantation house of Jan Thiel is inhabited and not open to the public.
Tip: The trails are excellent for biking and walking and a good combination with visit to the beach. Jan Thiel beach is also a good location for diving and snorkeling.

Walking / Hiking trails
Duration: approx 1 hour and 30 minutes
Length: approx 4 - 6 kilometres

Other recreation:
The west of the area borders the Curaçao Seaquarium where you can admire many marine animals. At Jan Thiel beach there are several cafés and restaurants and a diving center. Scuba divers and snorkelers can treat themselves to beautiful coral formations and sponges close to shore.  And horses can be hired from the stables close to the plantation house. Sorsaka is a plantation bordering Jan Thiel and an attraction in itself. Old wells, the "Den Dunki" bridge (a so-called slave bridge) and several hiking trails can be found here.
