Description
| Also known as Black Sand Beach (for its dark gray volcanic sand), this a great location for snorkelers and divers alike. Located between Santa Cruz and the Mushroom Forest, this site is surrounded by the private property of Landhuis San Nicolas and is currently only accessible by boat. The pristine beach, bordered by large mansalina trees, is usually deserted during the week and makes an excellent spot for a picnic. The northwest side of the beach offers the easiest entry and exit. Currents near shore are usually light, and the shallow reef and rocks surrounding the beach to both sides are great for snorkelers and beginning divers, providing various small caves and abundant fish life. The Black Sand Beach Wreck (marked by a buoy) lies upside down on a sandy bottom in 20 feet of water about 150 yards straight out from the beach. The wreck is just over a hundred feet long, and used to be a fishing boat with onboard freezer holds. Named the Catherine, she was sunk by Captain Goodlife in 1993 to honor his father captain Erik by creating an artificial reef. It's populated by Snappers, Scorpion Fish, Peacock Flounders, and nice growths of Brain Coral and Sponges. The flat sands surrounding the wreck support large colonies of garden eels swaying together as they search for food, always keeping their tail inside their hole. |
