Description

This unspoiled reef lies just 100 yards offshore from a postcard perfect, little sandy beach tucked beneath the cliffs. The property inland belongs to Land House San Nicolas, so this site can only be reached by boat. The beach makes a great place for a surface interval between dives and is easily accessed via the left side (when viewed from shore). The beach and dive site are named after Hulu, an escaped slave who lived out his final years as a free man in the rugged hills of Banda Abao, frequenting this beach to fish. The mooring buoy is fixed on a shallow terrace in 20 feet of water near the edge of the drop-off. The terrace is a mixture of sand, Elkhorn Coral, Finger Coral, and Gorgonians, with lots of reef fish like Peacock Flounders and Parrotfish. The site is somewhat protected, but currents and wave action vary; weather permitting the shallows are good for snorkeling. From the buoy head straight out to the drop-off and start your dive into the current. Visibility is usually in excess of 100 feet. This site does not get much traffic from either divers or fishermen, and the quality of the reef and abundance of fish life reflect this. The wall starts at 30 feet and drops fairly steeply down to 110 feet, covered with Sea Fans, Sea Plumes, Sheet Coral, and colonies of Black Coral. Look for Sea Turtles, Spotted Morays, Eagle Rays, Trunkfish, Frogfish, and large schools of Sergeant Majors. A great dive for macro photographers.
