Description
The beach is a sand and coral rubble mix, with easy entry towards the right hand side. Snorkelers will enjoy spending some time in the shallows around the rocks and cliffs to the right, and if boat traffic is light there is good snorkeling over the upper part of the reef wall, in 15 feet of water. Divers should head straight out to the reef, about 100 yards off shore. Currents are usually light, and though both directions are good, we recommend heading right. The reef starts in 15 feet of water and drops gradually to a depth below 80 feet. The best diving is in the 50 foot range, where stony corals dominate, including Star Coral, Brain Coral, Finger Coral, and Plate Coral interspersed with small patches of sand. There are a good number of reef fish here, including Trunkfish, Parrotfish, and Doctorfish, with Goldentail Eel hiding in the cracks. Also keep an eye out for the schools of squid, which often number in the dozens. This site, located in the center of Westpunt just off the small beach of Piscado, is well suited for all levels of divers. To reach this site by car, take a left at the painted rock in the center of Westpunt as you pass through a dip in the road shaded by large mansalina trees. The beach is just a few hundred yards further on. The parking lot is small and there are no facilities aside from a snack, which is open only on weekends. There is a boat ramp and a small peer, and on most days there is a moderate amount of boat traffic from the local fishermen.
