Description

Located between Bullenbaai and Boca Sami, this site is accessible from shore or boat. The bay itself is sheltered and generally calm, and it is good for snorkeling and beginning divers, with the shallows a combination of sand mixed with Gorgonians, Brain Coral, Blue Tang, and Parrotfish, to name a few. The car wrecks lie quite deep and should only be attempted by those with deep diving experience. The cars were originally being transported on a pontoon barge when heavy swells shifted the load and capsized the barge; dozens of cars and the barge sank to the bottom before they could be saved.

To reach the car wrecks from shore, take the Weg Naar Bullenbaai and follow the signs to Vaersenbaai. There is a small parking fee and an additional small fee to dive here. Facilities include bathrooms, showers, shaded areas, and a snack bar. The parking lot is close to the water, so we recommend gearing up at the car. Enter the bay and head left. It’s a lengthy swim to the wrecks, so consider making the journey on the surface to conserve air for your dive. The site is marked by a mooring buoy at the edge of the plateau at a depth of 25 feet. The wall drops off steeply here to more than 140 feet.

The wrecks of several dozen cars are spread along the wall, starting at 90 feet with the deepest lying at 130 feet. The wrecks are nicely encrusted with coral and sponges, with Parrotfish, Damselfish, Eels, and Soldierfish making their homes here. The remains of the pontoon boat can be found a short distance beyond the first wrecks, also overgrown with healthy corals. This site offers some exceptional photo opportunities for both macro and wide angle lenses. If you ask your buddy to pose in one of the cars, make sure to watch for sharp rusty protrusions; there are quite a few!
