Halfway

Description
| This first-rate site is situated halfway between Vaersenbaai and Boka St. Michiel, hence it's name. Surrounded by rugged cliffs and too far to swim from the nearest beach, Halfway can only be accessed by boat. As there is no mooring buoy, the reef doesn"t get much dive traffic and remains in very good condition. Waves and current are generally minimal and this site is suitable for all levels of divers and snorkelers. Keep in mind that without a mooring buoy this will be a drift dive. The best snorkeling is close to the cliffs and along the sandy terrace, which runs from a depth of 15 to 25 feet. Here you’ll find a mix of Gorgonians and Stony Corals, with some nice examples of Elkhorn Coral. With a little luck you can see Sting Rays nosing around the sand for a meal. The drop-off starts in 25 feet of water and falls fairly steeply to 110 feet. The reef along the wall is thick with Brain Coral, Star Coral, and various Sponges, and populated by Parrotfish, Burrfish, Triggerfish, and Hogfish, with some occasional deepwater fish, like Tuna and Mackerel making an appearance. Visibility is usually excellent, making this a good site for photographers. |
