Description
| This site is located just off the “Mega-Pier” in Otrobanda, where cruise ship passengers disembark to take day trips into Willemstad. These reefs do not see many visitors, as the Superior Producer lies in the same area and most divers are drawn to the wreck. When currents are strong (which is often the case here) we recommend reaching this site by boat, however, weather permitting it is accessible from shore. Park in front of the public pool about a mile northwest of Riffort (near the water plant). A rocky entrance makes booties essential. The Double Reef is only suitable for experienced divers. To reach the drop-off, swim straight out from shore about 100 yards; the reef starts in 30 feet of water and drops gradually to a depth of 100 feet, where it meets a sandy plateau. The reef is in good shape, with Brain Coral, Fire Coral, Finger Coral, and numerous reef fish, including Soldierfish, Angelfish, and Trumpetfish. Don’t forget to look for the smaller fish like Gobies, juvenile Trunkfish, and Blennies. The second reef is a short swim further out across the sandy plateau. It runs from the north point of the Mega-Pier until just past the water plant, at which point it’s the most impressive. Keep a close eye on the current. If it’s running strong we recommend aborting any attempt on the second reef, where it will likely only be stronger. |
