A great dive spot and easily accessible from shore at Playa Grandi (also called Playa Abou or Grote Knip), this charming area is worth checking out just for the scenery. To get here by car, head towards Westpunt past the town of Lagun. Take a left at Landhuis Knip, then follow the shore road past Kleine Knip to the parking lot at Grote Knip. Parking is free and amenities are limited to a few shaded areas, so don’t forget your water and snacks. Gear up in the parking lot and take the steps (somewhat damaged by Hurricane Lenny) down to the wide sandy beach below. During the week you might have the beach all to yourself, but on weekends it can get quite crowded.
The bay is sheltered and well suited to beginning divers and snorkelers. You can enter the water anywhere, but keep an eye out for boat traffic. Look along the cliff walls for Parrotfish, Soldierfish, Damselfish, and Peacock Flounders, with some healthy smaller Stony Coral colonies growing among the rocks. The drop-off is directly out from the bay, a good ten minute swim. To save air for your dive and for the return trip, we recommend snorkeling out. Sting rays are often seen along the sandy bottom, foraging for a meal. The drop-off starts in 35 feet of water and falls below 100 feet, with Sea Rods, Sea Plumes, Cactus Coral, and Plate Coral all found along the wall.
