Terug naar overzicht Saba

Description

For wreck lovers this site is a must see, and since it’s small it can easily be combined with a wall dive along the proximate drop-off. The Saba was sunk to create an artificial reef and diver attraction; the wreck of this tugboat lies in 30 feet of water, just up the terrace from the steep drop-off. Located about a half mile southeast of the Seaquarium, this site is best reached by boat. The wreck is in good condition, and heavily encrusted with Sponges, Cup Coral, and Brain Coral. Numerous small reef fish have made it their home, including Gobies, Blennies, and Damselfish. The Saba is a great location to play with your wide-angle lens.

We recommend exploring the wall first, and returning to the wreck towards the end of your dive. Current and waves are generally light here, but are known to vary. The drop-off starts at 30 feet and continues down below 120 feet. Start your dive into the current and keep a good eye on your depth gauge. Look for Lobster, Green Morays, Spotted Morays, Scorpionfish, and Barracuda.

The shallows are good for snorkeling when the swells aren’t too big. There are even some old signs explaining what the corals are, though most of these have gotten hard to read as they’ve become overgrown with coral themselves.
