Accessible from the following beaches

Description

Located a mile east of the Sea Aquarium, this is a great spot for divers and snorkelers alike. There is a small fee for parking in the secure lot at Jan Thiel Bay; from the parking lot it’s only a few hundred feet further to the water.

Enter at the sandy beach and swim out along the breakwater through the bay. It’s worth a few minutes to check out the sailboat wreck, sunk in 2003. It lies close to the wooden float and is marked by a small buoy, about 200 feet from shore. Lying on a sandy bottom in 30 feet of water with its deck at 15 feet, this wreck can be enjoyed by snorkelers as well. Continue on past the breakwaters and head slightly right of Jan Thiel Bay. A long shallow shelf leads to the drop off, with a depth of 15 to 20 feet, excellent for novice divers. Here you can find Finger Coral, Fire Coral, Sponges, and various Gorgonians, with Lizardfish and Goatfish in the sandy areas. It’s a ten minute swim to the drop off, and there is usually some surface chop and moderate current present. Make sure to pace yourself, watch your air supply, and keep an eye out for boat traffic, especially on weekends. The drop off starts at 20 feet and falls below 100 feet, but the best diving is between 45 and 65 feet. Here you’ll find Flower Corals, Cornetfish, and the slow moving Porcupinefish, among others.
