Description

Located on the north side of Caracas Bay, Beacon Point gets its name from the light beacon just inland from the site, placed to warn of ships. We recommend you only access this site by boat, though on a calm day you can swim in from Lost Anchor in 15 - 20 minutes. (Don't attempt this with rough weather!) The reef wall starts at a depth of 20 feet, dropping off to more than 300 feet. The wall gets increasingly steeper at greater depths. The reef is in nice shape, with Creole Wrasse, Jacks, and other fish schooling in large numbers. The best spot to find the big schools is along the point where the current breaks and nutrient rich waters rise up from the depth.

This area has no protection from often sizeable waves, and with the resulting underwater swells, only hard corals manage to thrive in the shallow areas. At depths below 50 feet a variety of sponges and soft coral make their appearance. Some of the sponges have grown impressively large. Barracuda, tarpon, tuna, and other big fish can also frequently be found here. With the floor well below recreational diving limits, make sure to keep a close eye on your depth gauge. When the currents are strong this makes for a great drift dive to Jan Thiel. Be aware that the currents at this site are unpredictable and can even reverse direction during the course of your dive.
