Description

Located just southeast of Carácasbaai, Director’s Bay earned its name back in the days when it was the exclusive playground for the directors of Shell Oil. The site is surrounded by private land and at this time is only reachable by boat. Currents are generally light, but the swells can pick up quickly with the wind. This site offers an attractive, diverse dive, with a good variety of reef fish. The mooring sits atop a wide, shallow terrace which runs from 15 to 25 feet deepHere you can find Staghorn Coral, Pencil Coral, and Brain Coral, with Angelfish and Lizardfish swimming among the formations. Seahorses can be spotted by those with a trained eye or local dive master along. If you can’t find them, keep looking! Their natural camouflage makes them quite difficult for novices to discover.

A short distance west of the mooring the reef drops off quite steeply, starting at 30 feet and dropping below 150 feet. Depending on the current, both directions are very nice. Sea Rods, Sea Fans, Tube Sponges, and Star Corals dominate the upper areas of the wall, while lower down Black Coral and Orange Elephant Ear Sponges catch your eye.

Anemones are plentiful, and for those wishing a quick manicure, several types of Cleaner Shrimp will be happy to help you out. Just extend your fingers, be patient, watch your buoyancy and please do not touch the coral. The wall itself is intersected by two sandy ravines where Stingrays and Eagle Rays occasionally make an appearance. Nutrient rich waters ensure plenty of schooling fish. Royal Grammas are common along the wall, as well as Grouper, Barracuda, and Squid.
