Terug naar overzicht Fuikbaai / Newport

Description

This site lies just off the coast of Fuikbaai. Private property constraints prohibit shore diving, but the boat trip down is beautiful and worthwhile, though it can be a bit rough. Translated from Dutch, Fuikbaai means fish trap bay, as the shape of the bay resembles a fish trap. (If you were thinking it meant something else, get your mind out of the gutter!) The area behind the bay was once used as a guano mine, and the bay was used to transport the bird droppings which were sold as fertilizer.

The mooring buoy is set at a depth of 25 feet, close to the drop-off. If the weather cooperates, there is some nice snorkeling along the cliffs and over the shallow areas of the reef. The reef starts in 30 feet of water and falls away to about 110 feet. The plateau is home to a variety of Gorgonians, swaying in the swell. Look for Sea Horses, Nudibranches, Goatfish, and Lizardfish. The reef wall is populated by Pillar Coral, Star Coral, Brain Coral, and Sponges with Squirrelfish, Groupers, Damselfish, and Filefish swimming among the formations. With the proximity of the nearby bay, Eagle Rays and Sting Rays are often seen nosing through the sand for a meal or swimming along the drop-off.
