Description

When the weather is calm this site, located off the point at Nieuwpoort, is indeed paradise. Surrounded by private property it can only be reached by boat. If surface chop allows, you’ll find some fantastic snorkeling along the lip of the wall and near the rocks by shore, with Long-Spined Urchins, Crabs, Anemones, and Parrotfish swimming among the Staghorn Coral and Brain Coral.

The mooring buoy is fixed near the drop-off in 25 feet of water with the wall falling below 130 feet. The reef is very healthy, particularly between 15 – 30 feet, with Star Coral, Brain Coral, Staghorn Coral, Pencil Coral, and Wire Coral growing in abundance. Head left (generally against the current), to find the best variety and most impressive specimens. Schools of Doctorfish and Yellowtail Snappers swim along the reef, while Butterflyfish and Trumpetfish hide among the waving Gorgonians. Aside from hanging upside down and posing as a Rope Sponge, the Trumpetfish also likes to ride along with Parrotfish. Since other fish aren’t scared of Parrotfish, the Trumpetfish uses this method to effectively sneak up on its prey. Large Barracudas and Sea Turtles are commonly spotted, as well as Rays who frequent the nearby Fuikbaai to hunt for food along the sandy bottom.

We recommend staying above 50 feet, as beneath that depth the quality of the reef deteriorates and there can be significant current.
