Description
| Slightly off the beaten path, Playa Jeremi is located just north of the town Lagun and 2 miles south of Knipbaii. Turn left from the main road to Westpunt when you see the sign and the red and white painted rock, then follow the dirt road to the nearby beach. An ample parking lot is situated atop the cliff, with easy beach access via a concrete ramp or the adjacent steps. Facilities are limited to picnic tables, thatched parasols, and trashcans. If you forgot your refreshments, there are several "snacks” in Lagun that would be happy to help out. This site offers a quiet sandy beach with a painless sandy entry and exit along the right side. The sheltered bay is ideal for beginning divers and snorkelers, with brain coral, orange cup coral, anemones, parrot fish, and damsel fish populating the submerged boulders along the cliffs in depths from 3 to 20 feet. For experienced divers, the outer reef offers a fantastic variety of unspoiled corals and abundant fish populations. The reef starts 150 yards due west from shore, so consider snorkeling out to conserve air for the dive and for your return to the beach. Black Coral and Gorgonians dominate the upper reef from 30 to 40 feet, giving way to Star Coral, Pencil Coral, Purple Stove Pipe Sponges, and Orange Elephant Ear Sponges at greater depth. The best diving is between 40 to 80 feet, but the reef continues well below 130 feet for those with tech diving experience. You can go either direction depending on the current, which is usually light. Lacking significant current, head right, as the reef in this direction is more remarkable. Turtles and Eagle Rays are often spotted cruising the wall here. Scorpionfish, Creole Wrasse, Yellow Goatfish, and Spotted Morays are among the other regular inhabitants. |
