Located on the north coast a few miles past Land House Brievengat, this beach is popular with local surfers due to its nice break and relatively easy ingress egress. Amenities are limited to a few shade structures and a small restaurant selling drinks and snacks. Because of the waves, visibility close to shore is often marginal, but clears up quickly a short distance out. Enter the water from the small beach on the west side of the bay; this area is protected by a rock jetty and is relatively calm, even with big waves. Swim out along the right side of the bay. Beware of boat traffic, as local fishermen use the same route to come and go from the little harbor. Consider swimming out on the surface so the fishing boats know where you are.
Outside the harbor the coral shelf is heavily encrusted with sea weed, giving way at greater depth to exemplary Star Corals, Brain Corals, and Pillar Corals. Small fish are abundant, and the north coast is a great place to see bigger animals like Rays, Turtles, and even Sharks. The shelf runs from a depth of 15 feet and gradually drops off to 100 feet, where it gives way to a flat expanse of sand. Currents can run quite strong here so this site is only recommended for experienced divers.
Current permitting, both directions are quite nice; always start your dive into the current to ensure an easy return. Navigation can be a bit tricky at Kanoa, so don’t forget your compass!
