Description

This dive spot, not to be confused with Rif St. Marie, is similar to Seldom Reef but located more towards the inside of Bullenbaai. When weather conditions prohibit diving at Seldom Reef, it’s often still possible to dive here. Shore access (via the Weg Naar Bullenbaai) is difficult even during ideal weather, and not recommended. Regular currents and upwelling provide this area with a constant supply of fresh water. Visibility is generally excellent, and the coral and fish life are profuse.

The mooring is fixed on the edge of the reef terrace in 30 feet of water, adjacent to the drop-off. The shallow areas inland of the mooring are worth spending some time. Consider ending your dive here; it’s a great way to off-gas.

The shallow terrace, between 15 and 25 feet, is colonized by abundant formations of Elkhorn Coral,
Pencil Coral, Star Coral, and Brain Coral, with some beautiful soft corals mixed in. We recommend swimming east (generally against the current), where you’ll encounter the greatest variety and quality of specimens, as well as schools of Doctor Fish, Goatfish, Yellowtail Snapper, Barracuda's and Mackeral.

The reef wall is quite spectacular. Starting at 30 feet and dropping rather steeply to 120 feet, keep an eye on the cracks and crevices for eels, lobster, and shrimp. The best diving is in the 30 – 60 foot range; below 60 feet the growth thins out quickly. Don’t forget to look towards the deep. Turtles, Barracuda, and Mackerel often cruise the reef here. This is a great spot for photographers looking to play with their wide angle lens. It’s also well suited for snorkeling, but only when the sea is calm.
